Darmstadt university is reknown for its very high standards for PhD dissertations. Therefore, many applicants face problems either with the acknowledgement of their previous diplomas (especially from abroad or from a German ‘Fachhochschule’) or with the formulation of a scientific research proposal – both pre-conditions for being accepted as a PhD student at this university.
The MSc diploma of the postgraduate course ‘International Co-operation and Urban Development’ provides the formal qualification to apply for acceptance as a PhD student at Darmstadt university. Furthermore, the Master’s course itself teaches the necessary academic skills to formulate a valid PhD proposal. Since formal PhD courses are not a tradition in Germany, the postgraduate Master’s course may well substitute such a PhD course as it exists in other countries. |

Due to the fact, that the field research incorporated in the second year of the Master’s course can provide basic data for the further research it is realistically possible to complete the PhD thesis within one year after completion of the 2-year Master’s course.
