darmstadt

Darmstadt , known as the city of Science and Arts is situated in the Rhine-Main area of Germany . It is a well known centre for Science and Technology and its universities and colleges all have good reputations in this field. Darmstadt is about 30km south of Frankfurt and 60km north of Heidelberg. Darmstadt 's population reaches to around 140,000 people. The city shows a variety of buildings and artifacts, dating back to as far as the baroque and renaissance times. It was known that Darmstadt is the home of the arts; however it received its second signature in 1997, being a technological city in recognition of its work in science and research of the industrial needs.

The heart of the city is marked by an ancient castle, housing some university departments, the central library, two clubs among other facilities. Next to it there is the University headquarters, the ancient theatre (housing the faculty of history)

In walking distance (like everything in town) there is the famous Mathildenhöhe with its Art Nouveau housing ensemble – including the so-called Wedding Tower, the city’s most famous symbol. Further South, you will find an interesting example of pop housing architecture designed by the Austrian Artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and further away renown examples of ecological domestic architecture at Kranichstein.

Given the large proportion of students among the local population there are numerous opportunities for socializing and distraction – to counterbalance the otherwise the very ‘productive’ and quiet study atmosphere.

campus

The modern University campus is well equipped with all essential scientific infrastructure.

Right behind the new university campus begins the forest which belongs to the Odenwald mountains and invites for extended walks. The famous historical city of Heidelberg is only half an hour away by train – the same distance to other regional centres such as Frankfurt, Wiesbaden or Mainz.
