Prof. Dr. Kosta Mathéy (*1946) studied architecture and planning
at German universities in Munich and Darmstadt. He was awarded a hons.
diploma at the AA Graduate School in London (housing studies) before
completing a PhD in sociology at Kassel University (thesis on self-help
housing policies). He joined Darmstadt University in 1980 as junior
teaching staff for five years (Planning and Building in the Developing
World) and was nominated Professor at Karlsruhe University 1991 where he
taught urban and regional development for two years. Since1993 he is
adjoint professor at Cuban School of Architecture in Havana (ISPJAE) and
full time professor at Darmstadt University again since 2002. Shorter
teaching assignments between 1987 and present included universities in
Weimar, Dortmund (Germany), Managua (Nicaragua), San José (Costa Rica),
Lima (Peru), Sta. Marta (Colombia), Porto Alegre (Brazil), Ife (Nigeria)
among others. He conducted academic research projects in Venezuela,
Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, and South Africa.
Mathéy’s professional career began as architectural assistant at the
London SOLON housing association in 1978. Since 1980, he is a registered
architect in Britain and the Commonwealth. Since then he has worked as a
consultant on housing and urban development cooperation projects for
various donor agencies (GTZ, KfW, EU, ILO, UNDP etc.) in Africa and
Latin America on short and medium term missions. He is co-founder and
member of the steering team of TRIALOG research association. In this
function he organized about one dozen national and international
research conferences. Prof. Mathéy has widely published on research results and other urban or education issues. The list includes 4 monographies, 6 edited books, chapters in 14 edited volumes and more than 60 articles in academic journals. |
