MA Politics and Sociology (1998),
PhD Town Planning (Forthcoming)

Lecturer in European Spatial Planning and Urban Sociology

Background I am a sociologist and urban planner, educated in France, the UK and Germany. After completing a first degree in Politics and Sociology at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (also known as Sciences-Po), I studied Town Planning at the Bartlett between 1998 and 2000 (M.Phil in Town Planning) and started a PhD in 2000 (part-time). My PhD research focused on urban governance and city marketing in the New Berlin, analysing the links between the symbolic (re)imaging of urban space, urban marketing practices and the conflicting politics of urban redevelopment in Berlin since 1989.
Prior to becoming a full-time Lecturer at the Bartlett in 2005, I worked for three years as Project Developer for the European Union Programme INTERREG IIIB North-West Europe, which funds transnational co-operation projects in spatial planning across 8 European countries, and also taught part-time at the Bartlett between 2001 and 2004.
Research & Consultancy

My research interests focus around four main themes:

Urban and Regional Governance
• Changes in the governance of planning and urban development in a European (comparative) perspective, with a particular focus on: new forms of urban entrepreneurialism and urban marketing; new scales of governance in city-regions (UK, Germany, France).
• The politics of urban development in Berlin since 1989.

Culture, Identity and Urban Regeneration
• The contested politics of 'culture and urban regeneration' linked with mega-events and flagship projects, such as European Capital of Culture.
• Collective memory, urban cultures, identity(ies) and the development of new urban landscapes in cities in transformation (including post-socialist cities).

European Spatial Planning
• The emergence of a European spatial planning agenda and the impact of the EU on spatial planning practices across Europe.
• INTERREG and trans-boundary cooperation networks between cities and regions in the enlarged EU.

Urban Sociology
• The impact of urban policies on gentrification, segregation and social mix in European cities.
