My teaching and research interests have focused on Globalization; Development Theory and Policy; ‘Third World Urbanization, Urban Policy, Politics and Planning; Urban Sustainability Policies; ‘Third World’ Housing Problems and Policies and Urban Violence in Developing Countries. I have a particular interest in Latin America. My research on Housing Problems and Policies has been carried out in the context of the debates on Self-Help Housing, Basic Needs, Alternative Technology and the Urban Informal Sector. My current teaching and research interests focus on the relationship between Development Strategies and Urban Policies in Developing Countries in the context of globalization, environmental imperatives and the changing relationship of the state to civil society. I have lectured widely in the UK, USA, South America, S. E. Asia and Europe and was a Guest Professor in Planning in Developing Countries in the Faculty of Architecture of Delft University of Technology, Holland between 1995-96. My current research interests include research into the relevance and viability of compact city theories for developing countries, and problems of urban violence in cities in developing countries. I am currently working on the debate on urban fragmentation and its relevance for compact city policies. |
